Bioreactors
What is a bioreactor?
A bioreactor is a highly specialized device used to create a controlled environment where cells, tissues, or even organs can grow and mature. These systems replicate critical conditions found inside the human body—such as temperature, pressure, nutrient supply, and oxygen levels—to ensure the proper development of biological materials.
The Need for Innovation
- Many tissue-engineered products require bioreactors for pre-conditioning and maturation before being utilized. Below is a blood vessel bioreactor that preconditions the tissue to emulate a blood vessel.
- Existing bioreactors are often custom-made, leading to variability and inconsistency.
Our Solution
The PTRME is developing a standardized, self-contained, and modular bioreactor for the manufacturing of a wide range of regenerative medicine products. This bioreactor system will:
- Apply precise physical, electrical, pressure, and fluid forces to tissues.
- Include in-line biosensors to monitor tissue health.
- Be small and adaptable for use in various settings, including space-based biomanufacturing.
Major Goals
- Design modular components for specific applications, such as uniaxial or biaxial tissue exercises.
- Build and test a prototype commercial bioreactor.
- Develop a bioreactor compatible with spaceflight, ensuring compact and efficient tissue manufacturing in microgravity.
