We’re thrilled to announce that Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) has received a significant grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF), led by Dr. Rashunda Richardson, associate professor of psychological science. This funding will play a vital role in advancing research capacity at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and is crucial for broadening participation in the STEM workforce.
Dr. Richardson, along with co-principal investigator Dr. Tangela Towns, will spearhead the project titled “Ideas Lab: The HBCU Ujima Collective.” This collaborative initiative includes Miles College, Howard University, Morgan State University, and Tennessee State University, focusing on creating a “Grow Your Own” model to train research administrators and scientists at HBCUs.
By enhancing the research culture at these institutions and encouraging students to explore careers in research administration, this project aims to increase the representation of African American students in advanced degree programs. This aligns perfectly with our NSF-PTRM Engine’s mission to foster diversity and innovation in STEM fields. Together, we are paving the way for the next generation of leaders in regenerative medicine and beyond!
