The Piedmont Triad Regenerative Medicine Engine (PTRME), elevated by an initial $15 million NSF grant in January 2024, has quickly become a magnet for innovation. In just one year, the region has attracted more than $266 million in private, philanthropic, and government investment—a remarkable 18X return on the NSF’s initial funding. This momentum is creating a flywheel effect, establishing the North Carolina Core as a unique regenerative medicine global nexus.
ProKidney, a company dedicated to regenerative medicine technologies to help relieve renal failure, made a recent decision to invest an additional $22.5M for expansion in Winston-Salem, further solidifying the Triad as a highly competitive region attracting investments from around the world.
Companies that can support technology development in related areas, such as Gilero, which is opening a state-of-the-art medical device facility in Greensboro, and Nelipak, which is launching its first North American specialty packaging operation in Winston-Salem, are strategically investing resources and choosing to establish their manufacturing facilities in the region.
By fostering collaboration among industry leaders and investing in local talent, the NSF-PTRME is strengthening American manufacturing, enhancing its competitiveness, and positioning itself as a global leader in the rapidly growing field of regenerative medicine.
